Color Day: Prep School Perfection

Happy Wednesday, dolls! We recently noticed the navy and green combination popping up in a number of things in Kate Spade's collections (bracelets, shoes, earrings, etc!) and just fell in love with it. But, admittedly, when we first decided to make a color board with these colors we immediately thought of Blair Waldorf in her bold golden yellow headband and Constance school uniform. We also thought of the University of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish, but the Queen B and her band of minions seemed slightly more in tune with the look we would like this board to inspire.  As some schools have already begun for Fall in the Northeast, it seems like the appropriate time to study a combination of colors that really evoke a scholarly feel.  Here are some ways to incorporate academia in your decor for a preppy look that's sure to earn you an A+ for style!

Color Day: Salmon, Chartreuse, and Baby Blue

Inspired by a photo found on Pinterest, we decided to pull these shades together for an inspiration board that is modern, youthful, and fun.  Chartreuse adds a unexpected burst of energy to the otherwise muted and romantic salmon and blue.  This is a combo that's prefect for an outdoorsy, whimsical spring or summer wedding or for some preppy meets shabby chic home decor.

Color Day: Pink, Teal, & Seafoam

Ready for spring?  While there's still 26 days left of "Winter", it certainly feels like Spring's on it's way with these crazy 50 and 60 degree days in the northeast.  While we're sad to have missed out on snow storms (and snow days!) this winter, we are looking forward to Spring and are multitude of weddings that are coming up.  Here's a look at one of our favorite muted, yet modern, spring color combos. We love the contrast of the teal, which helps add a little sophistication and richness to this otherwise muted palette.

Color Day: Mint, Mustard, and Charcoal

Ready to jump into Spring?  In February it's easy to get caught up in the reds and pink and purples of the season but for this week's board we're switching straying from the typical colors you'd expect and instead going for a cooler vibe.  Do you love mustard and gray together but aren't sure how to make it more "Spring" friendly? If so, just add some minty pastel green and you'll be all set for a modern and bright spring wedding.  Or, try pairing a minty green top with a mustard skirt for some super stylish work attire.

Color Day: Tangerine Tango

Every year we love to check to see what Pantone's "Color of the Year" is.  Last year was the cheerful and feminine Honeysuckle Pink. This year we are delighted to see Tangerine Tango, a vibrant, edgy, and sexy shade of reddish orange.  We're big on the red/orange color as we think it's fun and energizing and perfect for a Spring or summer wedding or to spice up your wardrobe for the new year! Added bonus to choosing the color orange for your event: it really goes a long way in the lighting department to create a warm, cozy, and romantic glow.

Color Day: Slate, Mustard, and Orange

Last week we paired slate gray with Kelly green for a look of modern elegance..  This week, as promised, we switched out our Kelly green for some fun, vibrant, and cheerful shades of fall (or summer!).  Though the orange and yellow may be the typical, traditional fall colors, the slate gray is gives it a cool, modern, and edgy feel.

Color Day: Magenta, Plum, and Teal

Today's color board was made for our friend, and bride to be, Val.  Over the weekend Jen was able to catch up with Val and of course she had to ask what her wedding colors would be. Although Val didn't seem totally sure on this kind of modern jewel tone/semi-peacock color combination, we love it and think these vibrant colors really represent her energetic, fun-loving personality well.  So, Val, this one's for you!  We hope it helps to ease your wedding stress and to get you revved up for all the fun planning you have coming your way!

Color Day: Teal and Navy

Modern or timeless? Formal or fun? Make waves with a color inspiration that gives you the best of both worlds.  Ocean inspired hues go a long way when yacht-club-classic navy is paired with youthful teal and crisp white, creating a look that is refreshing and semi-nautical, without going overboard.

Color Day: Orange & Fucshia

A year from tomorrow, our good friend Vik will be getting married (yay!).  With just a year left to go, it's time for V & J to start gathering ideas for ceremony and reception decor, tuxedos, dresses, shoes, etc. etc. etc. Putting together an elegant and festive Indian wedding on a budget can be overwhelming. So, this board was created, with their colors in mind,  to help get their creative juices flowing.  Bright fuchsia, cheerful orange, and dramatic chocolate brown will make for an Indian wedding that is vibrant, fun, and romantic.

Color Day: Daffodi-lightful

To our surprise, despite the odd weather we've been having in NJ, the Daffodils are here! Dotting the landscape from Turnpike exits to neighborhood garden beds, these bright and happy yellow flowers can been seen across the state right now. Daffodils bloom quickly and most commonly come in bright or pale yellow, warm white, or a white and yellow combo.  So, in true springtime fashion, let's celebrate the brief Daffodil season with a cheerful color board that's sure to brighten your day.

Color Day: Be My Valentine (Red & Pink)

Last week, our color day focused on shades of pink.  This week, we will add in a bit of red (and lots of hearts!) to give it that super Valentine's Day feel. We generally avoid wearing these colors together any other time because, well, they just look like Valentine's Day. So, with that, this is about the only time of year that we consider it truly acceptable. But, regardless of what we think, these colors are romantic and traditional and, when combined, give things an overall happy and delightful feel that we can't help but enjoy.

Color Day: Tickled Pink

It's almost February (seriously, where did January go?) so that means Valentine's Day is just around the corner.  Possibly the most romantic day of the year, Valentine's day is best represented by 2 colors - pink and red.  These colors are the ones most often associated with love and passion so we couldn't let a Valentine's day pass by without them.  Here is a color board to inspire you to embrace Cupid and get started with planning a romantic dinner for 2, a wedding for 200, or just a girly day with your single gal pals.

Color Day: Ice Blue, Platinum, and White

Christmas may be over, but it's still winter and that means plenty of frost and ice to go around.  So, we've taken cues from the season and created a lovely, glacial inspiration board for this week.  Go the way of the polar bear and dive into glacier (ice) blue, white, and silver (platinum) for chilling colors that help bring the look of the arctic to any space or event.

Color Day: Visions of Sugar Plums

Today's inspiration board is based on the most popular ballet of the season, The Nutcracker. The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is a classic and reminds us of childhood dreams of becoming ballerinas.  While we may not be actual dancers these days we can still dress up in frilly clothes, pull our hair into a bun, and show the world that we'll always be prima ballerinas at heart.

Color Day: Shades of Autumn

Here is another great color combo for fall!  We know that incorporating a whole range of colors can be tempting, particularly for the fall season, and who are we to stop you?!  What we will do is show you how to combine multiple fall colors in a way that is tasteful and sophisticated and not reminiscent of a hand print turkey.  So, to pick a few colors we went with brown, green, orange and yellow.   You could easily add more splashes of burgundy to this palette, if you so choose, but we like to keep things a little simpler.  Plus, focusing on just these four lends to an almost vintage, 1970's feel that we are really digging.

Color Day: Halloween (Orange and Black)

Better late than never!  We apologize to our regular readers for having to wait so long for today's color post so, without further ado:

When it comes to selecting color schemes not everyone goes for soft, coordinating colors. Some brave souls take the road less traveled and go for bold contrast. Luckily for those with a flair for fright, Halloween is all about the drama! Orange and black are the traditional colors associated with Halloween, probably due to a variety of things such as darkness, death, and the general orange-y colors of the harvest. Orange and black can be a fun pairing to really get you in the "spirit" of fall, but it can also be elegant and warm depending on the shades of orange you go with.  A vibrant orange will give you that youthful, spooktacular, kind of feel while a butternut squash or pumpkin hue will create a space that feels more cozy and sophisticated.

Color Day: Cranberry and Orange

Last week we played around with some Fall neutrals, but what about the warm, rich colors of fall?  We LOVE the combination of cranberry/burgundy with a burnt or pumpkin shade of orange. So much so, that Jen used this combination for her very own wedding.  Orange is becoming a huge trend in weddings, and pairing it up with another traditional Fall shade, like burgundy, insures your wedding will channel the spirit of fall in a way that is modern and tasteful.

Color Day: Chocolate, Brown, and Cream

When it comes to Fall decor, you can draw inspiration from so many different colors that it can be overwhelming.  If you want your home or event to evoke feelings of hot cider and comfy nights by the fireplace, think of natural neutrals like chocolate and cream blended with a nice medium toned brown. These calming hues flow perfectly into one another and can be used to create a sleek modern look or, if you're like us, you might prefer to embrace nature and create a rustic, charming, and cozy environment.  Using earth toned shades like these can really serve to create an inviting atmosphere without sacrificing style or drama and can look incredibly warm and romantic with the glow of candle light and gold accents.
