Thank You Class of 2012

As we begin the oh so anticipated 2013 competition week, I can't help but think of all of the wonderful people that have played such an important role in my life throughout this year.

A chaperone told us that often times, the girl that feels the most lonely at the end of the week is the girl with the crown. However, in my case, this statement was far from true.

The Class of 2012 was full of vivacious, confident, beautiful, and truly genuine young ladies. The friends I made last year have been my biggest support system throughout the year. I distinctly remember being afraid that no one would want to talk to me at the Coronation Ball.

However, ALL of my precious friends were so excited for me! Their reaction spoke volumes about the type of ladies they are. It has been such an honor to represent the Class of 2012. I will forever treasure the friendships we made!

All my love,
"Alabama"

Competition Week: Your Best "You"

As you make last minute preparations for the 2013 Miss Teen International pageants, you are probably packing tons of gorgeous gowns, fabulous make-up, and your favorite hair styling tools. You may have remembered to bring a sewing kit, extra earrings, and other last minute necessities. However, the most valuable thing you can bring to competition is your very best "you"!!

What exactly does that mean? Well, to be your best, you must be at peace with any outcome, have a positive self image, and come to the competition with a selfless goal in mind. Need some explanation?

Well, when I say, "be at peace with any outcome," I mean that you need to mentally prepare yourself for any outcome and know in you heart that a crown WILL NOT CHANGE YOU! No, the crown does not have super powers. It won't make you more talkative or more beautiful. It will, however, open more doors for you to serve people all over the world! You should also be prepared to win!! Ask yourself, "What would be my ultimate goal as Miss Teen International 2013?" If you are blessed with this beautiful Earthly crown, you will be ready to put your fabulous plan into action!

You should also have a positive self image. The Lord made us all beautiful and unique in very different ways! No, we don't all have the same color hair or the same body types, but in the end, none of that really matters! If you let your inner beauty shine, it will radiate outward and glorify God in all that you do!

Finally, come with a selfless goal in mind! If you come to the pageant simply wanting to win the crown, you will miss out on countless opportunities! If you come to the pageant with a servant's heart, you will have the opportunities to touch so many lives, raise awareness about your platform, and possibly gain more volunteers for your organization! What more could you ask for? I also made so many amazing friends last year that I am still in touch with because we weren't focused on the competition but rather on making lasting memories!

All my love,

Caroline

Goodbye, Sarah

I remember very distinctly the feelings of excitement that surged through my body as I sat in my room (at about 3am) after being crowned Miss Teen International 2012. I was absolutely thrilled beyond words to have gained a new title. However, it never really occurred to me that I would gain two absolutely amazing sisters! Unfortunately, in a little over a week, I will watch of them give up her title as Mrs. International 2012.

I have had the pleasure of reigning alongside Sarah Bazey throughout this year. She is an absolute inspiration to every person that she meets, and she always leaves a lasting impression on his or her heart. I have learned many valuable lessons about dedication, hard work, and perseverance from Sarah. I know that I will carry a piece of her with me throughout my life. I am so very thankful for the love, support, and hospitality Sarah has shown to my family and me throughout this past year.

We have shared so many wonderful memories together....and LOTS of laughs! Although it is almost time to say goodbye to “my” Mrs. International 2012, I know that the bond we have created will last a lifetime!

Thank you, Sarah, for being my role model and my sister! I love you very much!

Love and CUPCAKES,

Caroline

Writing Your Onstage Speech

I cannot believe that the 2013 Miss Teen International pageant is only three weeks away!! Time has really flown by for me, and I know that with all of the things you have had to do in preparation for competition, you are probably really beginning to feel the pressure!

As you know, during the competition you will receive a panel interview score and an onstage interview score, which is comprised of a 30 second speech and a platform-based question. I noticed that a lot of contestants focused more on being prepared for the question than their speech. However, your speech is very important!

As Miss Teen International 2012, I have used the information in my speech on many occasions because it provides a brief yet powerful overview of my platform. As a contestant, your speech is important to you because it determines your level of confidence and calmness going into your onstage question. If you nail your speech, you are sure to be able to deliver a confident and powerful answer onstage.

A great speech has two major components: content and delivery. You should include a brief summary of what your chosen platform is and why it is an important idea or organization. In other words, look at your platform page and choose the most important information. You are allotted a 30 second time period to deliver your speech. About 3 seconds before your time is up, you will hear the faint sound of wind chimes. The audience probably does not even hear this sound, but as a contestant, the wind chimes are an extremely stressful sound. Most girls tend to speed the last line (which was probably intended to be the most powerful) up. Make sure that you do not make your speech exactly 30 seconds, so you have adequate time to clearly deliver your speech.

This brings me to the second, and most important, component of the speech: your delivery. Because you have to memorize the speech, it is very difficult to sound passionate about what you are speaking about. My mom told me that I needed to speak in such a passionate way that every member of the audience would want to take part in the Miracle League and Shane's Inspiration because even if I did not win the crown, I had the perfect opportunity to teach hundreds of people about the organizations that are so close to my heart. In my opinion, it is more important to speak clearly and from your heart than to pack in tons of information! I hope this information is helpful as you write a speech of your very own!

I am looking forward to seeing you all very, very soon!

The Wonderful World of Disney

Wondering why you haven’t heard from me in a while? I have been unleashing my “inner kid” at the happiest place on Earth, also known as Disney World! Every year, my family takes a trip to Orlando, Florida for the 14 and under travel baseball team National Championship at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. Not only do we get to visit attractions at one of the largest baseball stadiums in Florida, interact with former major league baseball players, and meet legendary coaches, but we are also able to visit our favorite vacation spot!

This year, we visited a few places we have not been to in several years. On our first day, we learned about the magic of making movies at Universal Studios. A few of our favorite attractions were Shrek 4D, complete with moving seats! We also got to experience what it would be like to be outside during a category 5 tornado in the “Twister” attraction.

My absolute favorite attraction was the Men in Black roller coaster. The indoor roller coaster featured lots of twists and turns…all in complete darkness! We got to meet Frank the pug, the talking dog featured in the movies, and watch him interact with his trainers while learning new tricks!

We also spent a day at Islands of Adventure, Universal Studios’ high-thrill theme parks! Each area of the park is designed after a specific movie, including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Dr. Seuss’s “Seussland”. I have always loved Dr. Seuss, so naturally, the colorful world of Dr. Seuss was definitely one of my favorite places to see!

I may be a college student now, but I will never be too old for One fish, Two fish, Red fish, Blue fish!

Poseidon’s Fury felt like we were really walking through the ruins of Greece!

We always make a trip to the Lego store at Downtown Disney. My brothers always like to make lego racecars and race them with other Lego fans.

On our last night at Disney, we visited Chef Mickeys at Disney’s Contemporary hotel. During our Disney themed dinner, all of our favorite characters visited our table for a meet and greet. I always look forward to seeing Minnie Mouse, my all-time favorite Disney character. If you ever have the chance to visit Disney World, make sure to schedule a character dinner!

Visiting Disney World is always the perfect way to spend time with my family while having the time of our lives!

Cyber Etiquette

As my reign draws nearer to an end, I am constantly thinking of valuable lessons to pass on to the next Miss Teen International and young ladies, in general. The most valuable lesson I have learned in life to always act like a queen. When you wear a crown, all eyes are on you! It is important that as a role model, you set a positive example through your every action.

Although you may not realize it, your social media accounts often provide a first impression to others. Not only do you represent the International Pageants, but you also represent your family, title, and platform. Your language and photo choices reflect your morals and values. Social media accounts can provide an excellent way to market yourself and your platform, raise awareness about issues that are important to you, and even meet queens and others that are active with your platform. Facebook has been a lifesaver for me this year, because I am able to connect with people all over the world!

However, social media accounts can also be negative and even dangerous. As attractive and intelligent young women, it is important to not only set a positive example, but also, to keep yourself safe! You should be conscious about your choice of words and especially careful of the photos you post. Also, it is very important to monitor the amount of information you share about yourself. You may not realize it, but several types of phones and social media accounts sync to show your exact location. Make sure that you have these settings turned off at all times in order to keep yourself safe. Also, you should never accept a friend request from someone that you do not know. It is so simple to click ‘accept’ out of habit, but one click can be very dangerous!

I am confident that you all will make, as my mom says, “smart choices”. I encourage you to utilize all of the wonderful technology that is accessible to you. Simply remember to always present yourself as a classy woman, whether in person or via a computer!

Sweet Home Alabama

At this point, most of you know just about everything there is to know about me! You have unofficially met my family, learned about my platform and hobbies, and even gotten to attend a few family holidays and vacations. However, it occurred to me that some of you may not know much about the beautiful state that I represented at the 2012 Miss Teen International pageant.

My favorite thing about competing in the International system was learning about all of the different cultures that were represented. We all had different cultural backgrounds, yet we all united for one cause…to make the world a better place! It is so amazing that so many powerful young women exist in all corners of the world!

So, I think this is the perfect opportunity to teach you all about the state that I have lived in my entire life! Listed are a few “fun facts” you most likely did not know about the beautiful state of Alabama!

1. Actresses Debby Ryan (Disney Channel) and Courteney Cox (Friends) were both born in Alabama.

2. Alabama is currently the 23rd largest state in the country. My hometown, Dothan, Alabama, is the seventh largest city in Alabama.

3. The University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide football team is the current National Championship winning team. To date, they have won 15 National Championship titles.

4. Peanuts are the primary cash crop grown in Alabama. We celebrate with the National Peanut Festival held every year in October! In 2000, I was featured on an episode of “Festivals Around the World” on the Food Network that featured the 2000 National Peanut Festival.

5. The first space shuttle to put humans on the moon was built in Huntsville, Alabama.

6. My hometown also has the most restaurants, per capita, in the ENTIRE United States!

7. In Shelby County, Alabama, a group of contractors and homebuilders broke the record for the world’s fasting building of a Habitat for Humanity home. They built the family’s house in an astounding 3 hours and 26 minutes!

8. In Scottsboro, Alabama, a company named Unclaimed Baggage Center purchases unclaimed baggage from airlines across the nation.

9. The Travel Channel’s show, Monumental Mysteries, featured Enterprise, Alabama’s boll weevil monument. The monument was built after the boll weevil destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland because at the time, no pesticide had been created that was effective against the insect.

10. Heather Whitestone, one of the most influential “pageant girls” to have ever walked a stage, was born in Alabama. Although she was deaf, Heather danced on pointe during the talent portion of competition.

I hope that all of the ladies competing at the 2013 Miss International pageant take the time to learn about your fellow contestants. You will be amazed at how cultures differ across the world!

Love,

Caroline

Summer Fun in Orange Beach, Alabama

This past week, I got to kick off my summer vacation with a trip to a part of Alabama I have not spent much time in. I spent a week with friends in Orange Beach, Alabama! When most people think of beaches in our area, they think of Panama City Beach, Florida, because it the most popular Spring Break attraction in the United States. However, Alabama is home to some of the most beautiful beaches that are known for their family-friendly atmosphere. Orange Beach is the perfect spot for a family vacation!

We stayed at the Phoenix West hotel and resort. My favorite part was the lazy river! It was the perfect place to cool off when it got a little too warm. However, the view from our balcony was absolutely amazing! I loved watching the beautiful sunsets before dinner every night.

During our stay, we frequented several of the local restaurants. I don’t think I have ever eaten so much snow crab in my life!! We ate at so many delicious places, but my favorite restaurant was definitely The Hangout! The Hangout is a huge open restaurant that serves as a “hangout” for Orange Beach residents and visitors. After we were done with our delicious meal, (snow crab legs, of course!) we sat in huge over-sized beach chairs to watch local bands play on the stage outside. The Hangout is the perfect place to spend your entire night! I had such a blast!

Although I am a little sad that the end of this summer marks so many changes for my life, I know it will be one to remember! I hope you and your family have a fun, exciting, and safe summer!

Summer Service Projects

Summer is FINALLY here! I am so excited about my family’s upcoming vacation plans and just having a little time to relax. However, I try to always keep in mind the reason God has blessed me with so many wonderful gifts….to serve others! During the warmer months, we have fewer Miracle League and Shane’s Inspiration events. So, sometimes I have to get a little creative with my own summer service projects! Here are a few ideas I have put to use this summer:

- Donate unused clothing to homeless shelters/others in need

Most girls have way too many clothes than their closets can handle. While some clothes can be sold, others can be donated to others in need! Summer vacation is the perfect time to make room for new clothes while helping others!

- Host a “water drive”

When most people think of donating non-perishable items, they think of canned food drives. However, during the warmer months, food banks, summer camps for underprivileged children, and shelters of all kinds are ALWAYS in need of sanitary and easily accessible water.

- Adopt a pet!

In my last blog, I told you all about Tyson! Since being blessed with his sweet nature, I have become a bit of a pet adoption advocate. Summer is the PERFECT time to help keep homeless pets out of the heat and in a cool, comforting home!

- Volunteer at a summer camp

A New Member of the “Royal Family”

Last year, I was so inspired my Miss Teen International 2011, Jurnee Carr. Her platform, The Humane Society, focuses on eradicating animal abuse through no-kill shelters and most importantly, adoption! In Alabama, we experience absolutely BRUTAL summers due to the heat, paired with extreme humidity. My family and I decided that this would be a perfect time to help others in need. However, this time, the “person” we chose to help had two extra legs and a little extra hair on his body.

Meet Tyson! He is a four-year-old chocolate lab, and the newest member of our family. He is the most gentle and loving dog I have ever met. He loves to take walks and watch TLC! Tyson fits right into our baseball-loving family because it is his favorite game, as well! My mom normally does not allow us to have animals inside our house, but Tyson is a bit spoiled already. He even has his own room!

If you and your family decide that you have room for a new addition, I encourage you to at least visit your local Humane Society before making a choice about purchasing or adopting an animal. Knowing that we have helped Tyson live a better life is so rewarding…and so are his “kisses”!

“FAQ’s” with Miss Teen International

Since the crowning of the 2013 State, Country, and Regional Titleholders, I have received so much feedback from you all! I am so glad that I am able to answer your questions and help you through this process. I have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions that I have received to hopefully answer any further questions you may have! As always, feel free to contact me via Facebook, Twitter, or E-mail if you have any more questions.
Who is the best wardrobe designer?
I don’t really think there is an adequate answer to this question. So many different designers specialize in different aspects of the fashion world. Sherri Hill’s custom evening gowns will always be a favorite of mine. However, during competition week, I wore designs by Jovani, Fernando Wong, and even a BCBG dress I got at Lord and Taylor the day before we toured the Boys and Girls Club! The important thing is that you feel beautiful, classy, and comfortable in whatever you wear!
Do former contestants have a better chance of winning a title over a first-time contender because they have competed before?
Absolutely not! I won Miss Teen International as a first time contestant with an at-large title. Although it may be helpful to have a director or know how competition week works, all contestants are judges equally. However, I do recommend pairing up with a girl who has competed before! One of my very best friends last year had competed before, and she was a tremendous help to us all because she could prepare us for each phase of competition!
Are autograph cards really that important?
YES!!! Any item that is on your list to bring is an absolute MUST! Not only do you look unprepared if you do not bring the requested items, but you also take the chance of disappointing one of your many fans in Chicago. I have never seen children AND adults so excited to receive my autograph. It really makes their day, so PLEASE, PLEASE do not forget these!
What was the hardest phase of competition for you?
Fitness competition! I have always been very self-conscious about my body. I can’t tell you how many times I tried on my fitness outfit before competition to convince myself that I would not look completely awkward. I don’t think that any amount of crunches, early morning work-outs, or brutal runs can prepare you to flaunt your body in front of thousands of people. Again, it’s all about how YOU feel. There were TONS of girls with way more toned bodies than I had. Focus on being the complete package, rather than stressing over one particular event.
What will you miss most about being Miss Teen International 2012?
MY SISTERS! Sarah, Krista, and I have gotten the opportunity to grow extremely close this year, and I will miss seeing them as often as I do. They are both so beautiful—inside and out—and I know God has amazing plans for the rest of their lives!

Feeling Beautiful

I am so excited about the upcoming Miss Teen International Pageant! The more I learn about each of you and your respective platforms, the more honored I feel to represent such beautiful and accomplished young women. I want to thank you for the work you are doing to make this world a better place.  Winning the title of Miss Teen International 2012 is one of the best things that have ever happened to me. I have grown so much as a person this year, because I have been able to meet people from all walks of life. I have learned so many valuable life lessons this year, which I will cherish forever!

One particular lesson, I actually learned right before I left the hotel for finals night at the 2012 pageant. I have always been extremely driven, and I never settle for less than my very best! I am generally not one to get nervous, but believe it or not, I completely fell apart in the hair and make-up chair on Saturday night! I began to question everything I did to prepare for the pageant. I wondered if my dress would impress the judges, if I was adequately knowledgeable about my platforms, if I had done enough crunches, and if I had practiced my walks enough.

Throughout the week, looking at all of the beautiful young women around me, I began to almost feel inferior. I was not sure if I was even good enough to walk across that huge stage! My mom took me into the hall and read me this verse, Psalm 139: 13-14 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

I quickly realized that no matter if I came home with the crown or not, I am still on this Earth for a purpose and my Savior, Jesus Christ, will always love me. I know that sometimes it is difficult, but try to remember that no Earthly crown or reward is ever as great as the love Christ has for you! Although winning the title of Miss Teen International 2013 would be a dream come true, you will always be a princess no matter what because you are the daughter of a merciful, forgiving, and loving King!

All my love,

Caroline

Memorial Day Message

Memorial Day…unfortunately, when most people hear this phrase, they think of a long weekend off of work and possibly, a much needed vacation weekend. However, while these are all great ways to celebrate Memorial Day, the most important aspect of this holiday is the remembrance of those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

My grandparents have a door hanger on their pool house that I have never really noticed until recently. It reads, “The land of the free, because of the brave.” I do not think I could describe our great nation in any better words. Every single day, men and women fight for our country not knowing if they will ever return to the safety of their homes. I believe that passion like this is the driving force of our country.

So, this Memorial Day, I encourage you to take time to thank God for these brave men and women. Remember not only the fallen soldiers, but also how blessed our nation is to be the home of such brave heroes!

Graduation Day

My mom says that I have always been so ready to grow up. On my second day of Kindergarten, I cried because my mom made me wear a bow in my hair, but the “big girls” did not. I began planning for my future wedding when I was about seven after watching TLC’s “A Wedding Story”. I would always try out my ideas with my rather large collection of Barbie dolls. Of course, as with any student in high school, I could not wait to graduate! Well….today was the day!

I have to say that when I walked out of the Dothan Civic Center with my diploma in hand, my feelings were a lot different than what I expected. Although I know that the faculty and staff at Ashford High School have more than prepared the graduating class of 2013 for what lies ahead, I was sad to turn the page on that chapter of my life.

However, I know that God has wonderful plans in store for my life. Although I will miss seeing my friends in the halls every day, attending school-wide pep rallies, and especially just being a Senior, I know that the time has come for me to “grow up”…. something I have always wanted to do!

My best friend AND college roommate next year! Watch out, world!

I will definitely miss my principal, Mr. James Odom! I will never forget his frequent displays of school spirit…complete with AHS black and gold Converse shoes on the first day of EVERY school year!

Honors Brunch 2013

I think one of the most frequently asked “pageant questions” is, “Would you rather be beautiful or intelligent?” For me, that answer has always been very simple…intelligent! My parents have instilled in me a pride in my school work from a young age. I can distinctly remember practicing my coloring every night with my mom when I was in preschool, so I would not color outside of the lines in class. Even though it may seem silly now, I know that she was teaching me to value diligence and hard work, because in the end, it always pays off!

After twelve years of balancing youth group, spending time with friends and family, dance, cheerleading, piano, school clubs, the title of Miss Teen International 2012, and my school work, I can finally say that I am done with high school! I will graduate as a member of the National Beta Club and Honors Society with an Advanced Academic Diploma and grade point average of 111.23. WHEW!!! I have to say that I am so relieved!

However, I definitely was not the only one in my school system who successfully juggled extra-curricular activities and school work. Our school system recently held a brunch for the Top 10 students at all five of the schools in Houston County. We each were presented with an award for our academic achievements and were asked to tell about our future plans. As I watched my friends step up to the microphone as today’s basketball players, cheerleading captains, and club presidents to tell about their goals, I knew that we are all destined for an amazing future!

HCS Retirement Dinner

It is hard to believe that I will be a high school graduate in less than two weeks! During my time at Ashford High School, I have made lasting memories and learned valuable lessons that I will treasure forever. I know that I have received the best education possible so that I will be able to succeed in whatever career path I choose.

A very wise person once said, “To teach is to touch a life forever”.  I am so thankful for the wonderful teachers that have been such a blessing to me during my years at Ashford High School. I was so honored to be chosen by the superintendent of Houston County Schools to speak as Miss Teen International on behalf of the students in our county at the 2012-2013 Houston County Schools retirement dinner.

We said goodbye to twenty-five deserving administrators, teachers, faculty, and support staff as they begin a new chapter in their lives. I am forever grateful for their dedication, love, and support to the students of Houston County Schools!

Chicago

This year will be the last year that the Miss International pageants will be held in Chicago, Illinois. Next year, the pageants will move to the beautiful city of Jacksonville, Florida. Before the pageant relocates, I encourage you and your family to make the most of this wonderful opportunity and enjoy some of the wonderful experiences Chicago has to offer!  I have attended the pageant for the past three years. During this time, my family, friends, and I have found some of Chicago’s most exciting attractions. Here are my top five favorite places to visit and things to do in Chicago:

Navy Pier- Navy Pier one of my favorite places to go because of the beautiful scenery. Navy Pier overlooks the water and offers an exciting, family-friendly atmosphere. My absolute favorite attraction at Navy Pier is the HUGE Ferris wheel. We take a family photo in front of it every year. It is fun to see how much we have changed!

John Hancock Observatory- Last year was my first experience at the observatory, but it is one I definitely will not forget. From the top floor, you can see all of the beauty Chicago has to offer! The elevators are extremely fast! We may have had a little too much fun riding up and down just to see how long it took to reach the top.

Chicago Cubs game- I come from a family of huge Cubs fans! There is nothing more exciting than cheering on our favorite team as we stuff our faces with world-famous Chicago pizza.

The Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue- If you love to shop, the Magnificent Mile is the place for you! With stores ranging from H&M to Louis Vuitton, you are sure to find exactly what you are looking for…and more!

MISS TEEN INTERNATIONAL PAGEANT- This may be a little cheesy, but the Miss Teen International pageant has become a family tradition for my mom and I. Since I was 13, we have made a yearly trip to Chicago to watch the beautiful and empowering women compete for the crown. It has always been a dream of mine to wear the Miss Teen International crown. This experience has been one I will remember forever. I am so excited that all of you will get to share this experience with me this coming July!

I hope to see you all in the beautiful city of Chicago for the 2013 Miss and Miss Teen International Pageants!

Hand-In-Hand Guest Read

In one of my previous blogs, I told you all about one of my favorite places to serve, United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham. This week, I visited their preschool center, Hand-in-Hand as a guest reader. The Hand-in-Hand program is a state-of-the-art preschool center for children with special needs and their normally developing peers. Together, they learn and grow!

During my visit, I read to the two, three, and four-year-old classes. We read The Itsy Bitsy Spider and Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (one of my favorite books as a child). After we read, we sang songs and made a craft that went along with the books we read. I’m not sure who had more fun, the students or me! I am always so impressed with the UCP facility and staff. The students truly flourish in the peer tutoring setting. We are so blessed to have this facility in our area!

Lydia, a student with Downs Syndrome, had so much fun touching my crown and making crafts! She is doing so well with her language development. It is such a treat to be able to watch her progression with each visit I make.

The Itsy Bitsy Spider was definitely a class favorite!

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing these sweet smiles…and silly faces!

“Pageant Week Ready”

Most people ask me what my secrets for success were at last year’s Miss Teen International pageant. The best advice I can give you is to walk, talk, dress, and act like the queen. While there definitely is no exact formula to follow to win the coveted crown, there are several techniques that I use to help me succeed in whatever I do. One of those techniques is organization.

While you are in Chicago, you are representing your platform, your state, country, or region, and the International Pageant system. During pageant week, your schedule will be very hectic. After practices, you will not have time to go to your room and attempt to put together an outfit for events. Backstage, it is so important that you have all of your clothes, shoes, and jewelry ready to change in to immediately after you leave the stage. Although this may seem extremely hectic, I have compiled a list of helpful techniques to make sure that you are pageant week ready!

1 Take Notes!
Most of the time, my brain moves faster than my body! I am notorious for forgetting things. However, I have made it my mission to become more organized. I have found that taking notes is the best way to ensure that I never forget anything. I have one notebook that I write down all of the tasks that I need to complete. I simply check my notebook before I begin my day to make sure that I am prepared for all of my events!

2 The Spreadsheet
My mom and printed out a detailed spreadsheet for my outfits. We used phrases that we could recognize, so please excuse our strange descriptions! The important thing is that you can quickly identify which outfit, shoes, and jewelry to pair together for each event. We also included reminders of what to bring to each event to ensure that I was always adequately prepared. We made a separate spreadsheet for competition nights.

3 LABEL, LABEL, LABEL!
Make sure that you label EVERYTHING that you bring with you. I included my name, title, contestant number, and phone number to ensure that if I lost or misplaced any of my belongings, they could be returned to me. Remember that each contestant will have several of the same items, so it is VERY important that you can positively identify your belonging. You do not want to accidentally take someone else’s competition items or lose some of yours.

4 Individual Competition Jewelry Boxes
A family friend gave me monogrammed plastic jewelry boxes labeled for each phase of competition. They were a life saver! I could easily find my jewelry backstage, and I did not have to worry about losing earring backs or breaking my jewelry.

5 “Pageant on Wheels”
My “Pageant on Wheels” box is actually a huge rolling tackle box that I painted and bedazzled. It held everything that I could possibly need in case of an emergency. You can NEVER be “too prepared”. Do not count on other contestants to have the supplies you may need. I included a sewing kit (which was used on more than one occasion), extra earrings, body tape, snacks, all of my hair and make-up tools, lotion, Q-tips, paper towels, etc. It is probably my favorite “pageant accessory” because I can keeps all of my things together. I keep it assembled all of the time because I know I can toss it in my car and be prepared for whatever life throws my way!

6 KEEP CALM!
Have you ever noticed that you are able to keep yourself together a lot better when you are calm? I am definitely that way! Keep your goal, to spread awareness about your platform, in mind throughout your week at competition. If you know without a doubt that you are prepared, you will be able to communicate calmly and present yourself in a graceful, “queenly” manner.

Special Olympics Track & Field Day

I recently attended the 37th Annual Houston-Henry County Special Olympics track and field
day, which featured students and special citizens from Houston County Schools, Dothan City Schools,
Henry County Schools, and several private schools and adult centers.

The theme of this year’s Special Olympics was “The Power of Our Dreams”. During the
opening ceremonies, the Dothan Rescue Squad ran the Special Olympics torch through Downtown
Dothan onto the Special Olympics playing field. They ran over ten miles! Micheal Frichter, a student
from Henry County Schools was this year’s torch bearer. With a little help, Micheal lit the torch
signaling the beginning of the 2013 Special Olympic games.

The Special Olympians participated in the areas of track and softball throw. Every participant
received a medal and their photo on the Olympic platform. Every child was paired with a buddy from
his or her school who cheered them on throughout the games. Despite the rainy weather, we had a
great turn out and ALL of the Olympians had a great time. Their hard work and practice really paid off!

I would like to extend my warmest gratitude to all of the sponsors for this year’s games,
especially all of the students that graciously donated their time to cheer on their special peers in this
year’s games.

All my love,

Caroline
